WSJ 2019 – Leader expression of interest

29 April 2016

If you followed the adventures of the Cornish Contingent to the World Jamboree in Japan, you may fancy taking part in the 2019 World Jamboree, being held in the USA. An incredible opportunity to provide life changing experiences for young people from Cornwall and the rest of the world.

Cornwall’s Assistant County Commissioner (International) has set up a page to gauge adult interest in being part of the Cornwall Contingent for 2019

Official Website for WSJ 2019: 2019wsj.org

Please Note:

To attend as a member of IST or Contingent Leader, you will need to be over 18 in July 2019.

Whilst contingent leaders are selected by Cornwall Scout Association, members of the IST are selected by the UK Contingent team. Although the form allows you to “sign up” for IST (International Service Team) this is not the official sign up for joining the Jamboree. This allows the Cornwall Scouts International Team to track who might be interested to provide additional support as the process progresses. Scouters wishing to attend as IST will need to sign up for the official IST selection process run by The Scout Association Headquarters (likely 2017 onwards).

Information submitted through the Weebly website will be available to members of the Cornwall Scouts International Team to enable them to begin the process of selecting Contingent Leaders and support those interested in attending as IST.

To hopefully give you an idea of what is involved in being a Unit Leader or member of the IST, here are some details from the 2015 Jamboree.

Unit Leaders
(From the Cornwall Scouts Japan 2015 unit leader selection)
What are we looking for:
• Active adult member of the Scout Association or Girlguiding (at the time of the Jamboree)
• Ability to work as part of a team
• Ability to inspire and motivate individuals
• A flexible and positive attitude to work
• Sensitivity to other cultures and a willingness to work together with a wide variety of people
• Reasonable level of fitness
• Knowledge and understanding of the needs of 14 – 18 year olds
• Ability to work under pressure in a demanding environment
• Please be advised that the roles will be physically demanding.

What is the IST?
(From the Scout Associations Japan 2015 pages)
The IST is made up of adult volunteers from all over the world who run all the activities and services at the jamboree on behalf of the organisers. There will be different departments including those working on the sub camps, onsite programme, offsite activities, Site Management, Transport, Food and Trading. Please note it cannot be guaranteed that everyone will be allocated to their preferred department.

IST members will need to be adaptable, especially given the location of the jamboree and the cultural differences and language barriers that this brings. Days at the jamboree are generally long, sleep is at a premium and IST jobs may be physically and mentally demanding. The size of the jamboree site is very large and there is no transport to get around other than by your own means.
